When we discussed the best air fryers in India as a team, this one was a debated model. Due to the low recognition of Brightflame, we doubted this product to come in the best ones. Nonetheless, a few features which this air fryer offers where matchless and made us include it in our top list.

What Is Pressure Cooking, and What Does It Do? A Pressure Cooker FAQ

This week we’ve been teasing you with some pressure cooker posts — a discussion of your experience with this old-fashioned appliance, a peek inside a pressure cooker cookbook — but today we’re going to get down to the basics. What is a pressure cooker anyway? When was it invented? How does it work? Why would you consider adding one to your arsenal of kitchen tools?

The Marmite de Papin, an early pressure cooker prototype, at Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris.

What is a pressure cooker, and what does it do?
A pressure cooker works on a simple principle: Steam pressure. A sealed pot, with a lot of steam inside, builds up high pressure, which helps food cook faster.

When was the pressure cooker invented?
It was invented in the 1600s by a Frenchman by Denis Papin, who wanted to translate new discoveries in physics about pressure and steam into cooking. He called his pot the “Digester” but it took quite a while before better manufacturing standards and technology could make these high pressure pots safe.

A short video intended to show kids how pressure cooking works.

How does a pressure cooker work?
A pressure cooker is a sealed pot with a valve that controls the steam pressure inside. As the pot heats up, the liquid inside forms steam, which raises the pressure in the pot. This high pressure steam has two major effects:

  1. Raises the boiling point of the water in the pot. When cooking something wet, like a stew or steamed vegetables, the heat of your cooking is limited to the boiling point of water (212°F). But with the steam’s pressure now the boiling point can get as high as 250°F. This higher heat helps the food to cook faster.
  2. Raises the pressure, forcing liquid into the food. The high pressure also helps force liquid and moisture into the food quickly, which helps it cook faster and also helps certain foods, like tough meat, get very tender very quickly.

The extra-high heat of the pressure cooker also promotes caramelization and browning in a surprising way — we’re not used to food caramelizing when it is cooking in liquid. But the flavors created in a pressure cooker can be really deep and complex — unlike regular steamed foods.

For a closer look at a pressure cooker in action, check out Modernist Cuisine:

  • How Pressure Cookers Work at Modernist Cuisine

What can you cook in the pressure cooker?
Almost anything! It cooks rice in just a few minutes, and it cooks tougher things like beans and chickpeas in much less than an hour. It is very good for foods that need to be tenderized like braised meats and roasts. But people have cooked all kinds of other things in it too. Laura at Hip Pressure Cooking even made hard-boiled eggs (apparently the shells pop right off). But it is used most frequently around the world for beans and pulses, stews, and vegetables.

What’s tricky about cooking in a pressure cooker?
It’s a whole new way of cooking, with its own language and processes. You usually need to wait for a pressure cooker to heat up, then you add the food and the lid, and let it cook for a certain amount of time, at a certain pressure level. (How long? There are many pressure cooking charts that show you how long certain foods should cook — I use the one that came with my electric pressure cooker.) Then you let the pressure release (sometimes fast, sometimes slow — depends on the recipe).

In all of this, your instincts as a cook are not always helpful. We know how to sauté, how to brown meat, how to boil potatoes. But a pressure cooker is a sealed box — you can’t touch or taste the food as it is cooking, and successful pressure cooking relies on a new bank of knowledge that most of us have to acquire.

What’s pretty great about the pressure cooker?
But is it worth it? I think so, for many people. The pressure cooker is highly efficient — it uses far less energy than many other appliances, since it cooks so quickly and leverages the pressure powers of steam. Last week I made the most tender, falling-apart lamb curry I’ve ever had, with the flavors of the spices saturating the meat. I also made chickpeas from scratch in 45 minutes, and spiced rice in 6.

The pressure cooker really should be called the fast cooker — it’s a fascinating tool and good for many, many dishes in the kitchen.

We’ll be bringing you more about the pressure cooker this week and next — recipes, how tos, pressure cooker reviews, and more! Is there anything in particular you’d like to learn?

The 6 Best Crepe Makers of 2019

Best Overall: NutriChef Electric Crepe Maker
Buy on AmazonBuy on Walmart
The NutriChef Electric Crepe Maker has a large, 12-inch cooking surface and a simple dial for temperature control to make the perfect crepes, but it can also be used as a griddle to make standard pancakes, fried eggs, bacon, or anything else you’d cook on a standard griddle. It’s also great for heating tortillas or flatbreads. The surface is nonstick aluminum that heats quickly and evenly.

A wooden batter spreader and wooden spatula for making and handling crepes is included. The cooking surface has a very slight lip that helps keep juices and fats from dripping off during cooking, but it’s low enough so it doesn’t interfere with sliding a spatula under the crepes.

Best Stovetop Pan: Nordic Ware Traditional French Steel Crepe Pan
Buy on Amazon
This crepe pan is a traditional crepe pan design that works on any stove. It’s made from aluminized steel and has a nonstick surface so the crepes release easily and cleanup is easy – just hand wash with a mild detergent. The steel conducts heat well, so the super-thin crepes cook evenly.

This 10-inch pan is large enough for standard or large crepes. It’s made in America, but has an imported handle. The sloped edge makes it easy for crepes to slide out of the pan without tearing, so you can make a large batch and stack them neatly.

When you’re not making crepes, you can use the pan to cook eggs or hash browns, make omelets, or cook standard pancakes, but because of the slow sides, you won’t be using this to make stews or sauces.

Best Budget: Salton Crepe Maker
Buy on AmazonBuy on Walmart
This crepe maker lets you dip the cooking surface into the batter – a batter tray is included – so you can let the excess drip off to create the thinnest crepes possible. Set the crepe maker down to finish the cooking. The cooking surface is 7 1/2 inches in diameter and has a nonstick surface so the crepes release easily and cleanup is just as simple, but you shouldn’t immerse it in water. To remove the crepes, just flip the cooker over, or use the included spatula.

While this is designed for making crepes, you can also use it to fry an egg with the cooking surface upright. The cooker is cordless and gets its power from the base unit. Controls are simple – just and on-off switch and an indicator light. The power cord tucks away neatly for storage.

Best High-End: Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Crepe Pan
Buy on Amazon
Made from enameled cast iron with a traditional shape, the Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Crepe Pan heats evenly and retains the heat to cook one crepe after another without pausing. The exterior is colorful enamel and the interior is a satin-finish black that will never need the seasoning that raw cast iron requires. It can be used on any stovetop and can also be used in the oven at any temperature.

The handle is ergonomically designed so you can swirl the batter, but cast iron is always heavy, so it might be tiring for someone with hand or wrist issues. However, you could use a batter spreader while leaving the pan on the stove.

When you’re not making crepes, you can use this on the stove to cook eggs, pancakes, or similar foods, or to heat tortillas or flatbreads. Use it in the oven to cook your personal-sized pizzas, too.

This should be hand washed.

Best Multi-Tasker: Cuisinart International Chef Crepe Maker
Buy on AmazonBuy on Walmart
If you like crepes, but don’t like them enough to want a dedicated cooker for them, this multi-use crepe maker will show up on your kitchen counter often. Not only can it be used for crepes and pancakes, but it has reversible plates so you can also make pizzelles. Then turn the pizzelles into ice cream cones with the included cone roller.

Depending on what you’re cooking, this can be used in a closed position to cook the food on both sides at once, or open it flat to cook on two surfaces at the same time. It has dual knobs for controlling temperature and time, and an audible alarm.
This has an 8 1/3-inch diameter nonstick cooking surface and includes a measuring spoon, tongs, and an ice cream cone roller. The lid locks closed for upright storage. The cooking plates are dishwasher safe but are simple to wash by hand.

Best Professional Model: Health and Home No Edge Crepe Maker
Buy on Amazon
If you’re really serious about crepe making, you might want to upgrade to an electric crepe maker that’s more professional. This one offers a whopping 1000-watt heating element for fast heating and it has a 13-inch diameter surface for cooking regular or large crepes – or make two or three mini crepes. You can also use this for making pancakes or heating tortillas or flatbreads.

The nonstick coating releases the crepes easily and makes cleanup easy, too. There’s a temperature control knob to adjust the temperature for perfect cooking, whether you’re making crepes or eggs. A light indicates when the cooking surface has reached your desired temperature. Side handles make it easy to move or reposition.

This includes a wooden batter spreader and spatula for making and handling the crepes. Since there is no lip around the cooking surface, you might not want to cook foods that would release liquid or fat during cooking, since it would drip off the edges.

7 Best Sandwich Makers Reviews in India 2019

A good sandwich maker makes your job of making a sandwich very easy and in almost no time. You can expect delicious sandwiches in just the click of a button.

Traditional pan based methods of making a sandwich are annoying because you tend to spill out the stuffing inside the sandwich while flipping the sandwich to the other side. It is a big issue of keeping the ingredients all together.

But the issue is no longer a problem with a sandwich maker. It will make your job of making a sandwich easier as you no longer need to flip the sandwich. Place the sandwich in the maker and it will cook it from both the sides in a perfect taste.

Generally, there are two different types of sandwich makers. One is the panini sandwich maker which is a grill styled sandwich maker notably used to make panini grill sandwiches but can also be used as a griddle and for normal toasting. The other one is the 4 triangle sandwich maker which as it name suggests, comes with 4 triangle grooves. These grooves enable you to make 4 sandwiches in a single go. Before going to pick a sandwich maker, think if you are going to use the sandwich maker on a regular basis or irregularly. If regular, go for a sandwich maker that has a metal handle as it is more durable and ideal for regular use. Also, try to look for non-stick materials as they help you make oil free sandwiches compared to pan based oil sandwiches.

Depending on the number of people in your house, your choice of the size of the sandwich maker should change. Big households should go for larger panini bases or bigger 4 triangle versions. A typical sandwich maker would consume around 750 watts of power but this consumption increases with size.

As all of these factors are tricky and not easy to understand, we have done a detailed research and have created a list of the best sandwich makers available to buy online. Also, we have written a detailed “Sandwich Maker Buying Guide” that is available at the end of the article that will help you pick the right device to make sandwiches. Be sure to read it too.

Sandwich Maker Buying Guide:

Types of Sandwich Makers:

Sandwich makers are relatively new to the Indian market. Not everyone knows that actually, there are many different types of sandwich makers. First of all, there is the panini press maker and a 4 triangle sandwich maker depending on the type of press and the sandwich output that you get from it.

  • Panini press:

Also called as a sandwich grill, this is the most simple of the sandwich makers. It has threaded grooves on both sides of the pressing plates inside the sandwich maker. When you place the bread inside the sandwich maker, it actually presses the sandwich and then heats it to get a proper taste. Mostly used to make panini styled sandwiches, hence the name panini press.

  • Four triangle sandwich maker:

As the name says, this sandwich maker has 4 triangles inside the plates of the sandwich maker. These four triangles give you four pieces of equally cooked sandwiches as shown in the figure.

Both of the above mentioned models are great product models. If you are a busy yet a person interested in the gastronomic and cultural taste of the food you eat, go for a panini press model. If you are a busy person who needs to make a lot of sandwiches in very little time, then go for a 4 triangle sandwich maker.

Improtant Points to Consider While Purchasing

1. Size of the Sandwich maker:

The size of a sandwich maker is first and important to consider. This is dependent on how big and how many sandwiches you need to make in a single go. A typical 4 triangle sandwich is usually normal 4 loaf sized to accomodate 8 normal sized bread slices in 4 quadrants.

A panini grill sandwich comes with varied sizes. You can choose a normal sized version while a bigger version is ideal for exotic of continental styled sandwiches. A perfect partner for backyard parties as such.

2. Non-stick Coating on the inside plates:

Non stick nature of a sandwich maker is often a most overlooked factor when it comes to sandwich makers. But this is an important feature as most sandwiches are less oil or mostly, oil less dishes. This aids in the making of oil free dishes.

A normal bread might not stick onto the surfaces of a sandwich but the same cannot be said about other ingredients. While making sandwiches, we tend to use a lot of different ingredients such as mayonnaise, vegetables etc., and they may end up sticking to the sides of the sandwich maker and thus end up spoiling the material. Hence it is important to choose a sandwich maker which has non stick internal plates inside them.

3. Easy to clean body:

Next important aspect of a sandwich maker is having an easily cleanable body. While most manufactures tend to concentrate on how better the sandwich maker is and how delicious food it can make, most of them forget one of the most important thing. That is, how easily can one clean up the sandwich maker after its usage.

Non stick sandwich makers are easy to clean as they have an easy to clean internal oil free coating. Most of the sandwich makers mentioned in the list are easy to clean and are not blemished.

4. Temperature and Heating Zone:

Not every sandwich maker comes with an adjustable temperature. The ability to adjust the temperature of cooking helps you in making different recipes of sandwiches.

When it comes to panini press sandwich makers, most of them come with a temperature control setting. With this one can easily adjust the level of the heating element temperature. This makes a better making of panini sandwiches. The best part about temperature controlled panini presses is the fact that they could be used for making other food items such as hot dogs, burgers or falafel as well.

Another important factor to be considered along with the temperature setting of a sandwich maker is its heating element and heating zone. The ability to tune in temperature and where exactly does this heat drop in are equally important.

Pick a sandwich maker which has equal heating zones divided all over in the inside cooking plates. This means that make sure that all of the heat will be distributed equally inside the sandwich maker. So that you do not need to have a sandwich which is hot in some parts and cold in the other parts.

5. Grill Plates and Dip Tray:

Panini grill plates are usually made out of glass, ceramic, non-stick teflon or cast iron material. These plates are available for stove top and electric as well. Rigid with grooves in them, a few grill plates are also smooth in nature like that of oven bases. But for making grilled panini sandwiches, rigid plates are preferred.

Grill plates which are easy to remove and clean are the best type of plates. They make your job easy and also drip out the oil, if any, into the dip tray.

This dip tray’s main function is to contain all of the grease, oil fat or any other residual material from all the cooking that you undertake in a sandwich maker. While not every sandwich maker comes with a drip tray, it is suggested that you pick a product with a dip tray. Will always come in handy.

6. Total capacity of the sandwich maker:

Undoubtedly, a 4 triangle sandwich maker might seem like a go to option here, but you have to be a little of a lateral thinker. Imagine having a big panini press machine and you can add up to 10 slices of bread side by side. This will give you 5 sandwiches in a single go compared to 4 from the triangle sandwich maker.

Thus one has to be caliculate their need before making a choice. If you are a single person, go for a regular sized panini press or a small 4 triangle. For mid to small families, a large 4 triangle is a better option while for very large families, it is best to pick a large sized panini press and make adjustments to create 5 sandwiches in a single go.

7. User-Friendly:

Most of the makers come with cool touch technology which helps in preventing the burns that might cause while it is running, opt for the ones which are easy to clean and has cool touch technology.

8. Speed of Operation:

The very point of buying a sandwich maker is because it makes our job of making sandwiches faster and easier. Apart from being user friendly, the sandwich maker you are picking should be very fast in operation.

Do not go after blatant product promises as fast should not lead to burnt and bitter sandwiches. An ideal sandwich maker should be fast in operation and should churn out good quality sandwiches.

9. Power Consumption and Cord Length:

Higher power helps in preparing the sandwiches in quick time, opt for the ones that have higher power consumption.  Most of the normal makers come with a cord length that is around 1 meter, so keep an eye on the cord length of the maker, since small cord length is difficult to operate.

10. Budget Friendly:

Lastly, budget of the sandwich maker has to be considered. You see, after considering all of the above mentioned factors, you will be left with a handful of choices which are equally competent. Bit the best and economic option of them all.

Here, you need to understand that economic does not mean cheap. Cheap sandwich makers are sticky, blatantly burn your food and at times, even have a risk of electricity leakage. Economic sandwich makers may not be fancy but they do the job with a normal design and limited options. Better economic than cheap and dangerous.

Benefits of a Sandwich Maker:

A sandwich maker is a versatile device that helps you in cooking tasty and quality food very fast. It has several benefits like

  • Faster Cooking: One can simply place a few slices of bread within the sandwich maker and expect delicious sandwiches within a short while.
  • Quality: Sandwich makers offer great quality of food cooked in them. They make sure that all of the nutritional value of the food is preserved when it is cooked.
  • Simple to use: Compared to most food preparing devices, a sandwich maker is simple to use. One can place the slices on the maker and with the press of a single button, it can grill up very tasty sandwiches.
  • Perfect Sandwiches: When we make sandwiches at home, we are prone to making irregularly shaped of soggy or a little bit of burnt ones. The ones made in a sandwich maker are strong and perfectly shaped.
  • Varieties of preparation: A sandwich maker does not necessarily be used to prepare sandwiches, it can be used to make hot dogs, burgers and a wide range of other simple dishes.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How to clean sandwich maker? Is there any special way to be followed?

Never clean a sandwich maker in a dishwasher or with direct soap water. A sandwich maker is an electric device hence the cleaning of this should be done carefully.
First of all, unplug the device and remove and separate the cooking plates of the sandwich maker from the device. Dust and remove any crumbs that are present beneath the plates or the gaps under the plates.
Prepare a soap solution or vinegar-lemon water. Now neatly scrub and clean the plates. Be careful as not to scrub the plates hard if the plates are made out of brittle or delicate items.
Also, make sure that you are drying out the plates completely before inserting them back into the sandwich maker. Alternatively, you can also use tissues or wet wipes to wipe the device clean. What are the guidelines for first-time sandwich maker users?

Please be very careful when you use the device for the first time.
* Please brush the surface lightly using cooling oil.
* Don’t use any kind of spreads as it may burn the nonstick surface.
* Allow the device to heat up for five minutes by opening the lid.
* After heating, please allow the device to cool down, and make sure you remove the excess oil with absorbent paper. How can I know the sandwich is ready to use?

Once you turn on the device with power supply a red light will power up. This is an indication that the device has turned on.
After some time, once the device reaches certain optimal cooking temperature, the LED light will turn into blue colour. This is an indication that the device is ready for the usage of making sandwiches. My sandwich maker is releasing the smoke when I first used it?

It is quite normal for a sandwich maker to emit smoke when you use it for the first time. Also, sometimes, when the food or the sandwich that you place inside the maker is smaller, the device plates get in contact with each other and this may result in the rise of smoke.
But one always has to be cautious. Check with the wiring if the smoke is coming from the internal circuitry of the device. If there is too much smoke coming out of the device, turn it off, unplug it from the socket and call up an electrician or the customer care. Refrain from using the device until a professional technician takes a look at it.Can I grill and toast on the sandwich maker?

Yes, one can use a sandwich maker to toast and grill food such as chicken, potatoes. But the extent and the quality of grilling may differ.
In fact there are a lot of sanwich makers that come with inbuilt grill plates or grilling tables that one can use to grill seperate food items. Can I toast bread on the sandwich maker?

Absolutely Yes. You can toast bread or even buns on a sandwich maker. But if you directly place the bread in the sandwich maker, it may get black and burnt. Always remember to use butter or some kind of fry spread to make the bread crispy and eatable.A number of sandwiches can I make at a time?

This is totally dependent on the size of the sandwich maker and the size of the bread loaf. A standard sized loaf in a 4 plate sandwich maker can make you 4 half sliced sandwiches at a time. But a large loaf whole sandwich maker may give you only 2 sandwiches in a single go. The concept of batch cooking in a sandwich maker is entirely dependent on your serving sizes. Why should I use sandwich maker with nonstick coating?

Non-stick, as the name suggests, prevents any of the food material that you place in the device from sticking to the sides of the sandwich maker. Cooking any dough based substance in a normal vessel will result in the food getting stuck to the walls of the said vessel and it will make the cleaning process entirely difficult.
Given the ingredients of a sandwich, it is better to use nonstick coated maker since it is easy to clean and also it prevents the food from sticking to the surface. How to make a potato, grill paneer or any basic sandwich using a sandwich maker?

First clean and slice cut the potatoes (grill paneer or any vegetable of choice) to the desired shape that you want. Take two slices of bread, apply butter on one side of each bread. Now place the potatoes on one of the bread.
If you are making a grill paneer sandwich, first roast some cubes of paneer (you can do that on the sandwich maker as well).
You can even add slices of tomatoes over the potatoes. Place some lettuce/spinach on top of it. Sprinkle some salt, pepper and a pinch of chilli powder on top of the lettuce/spinach.
Now close the bread with the other slice, cut it into triangular pieces and place them on the sandwich maker.
Turn on the device and the device automatically turns off when the sandwiches are ready. Can you cook sausages in a sandwich maker?

No. the cooking temperature required for a sausage is higher than the temperature offered by a sandwich maker. Hence it is not exactly possible to cook sausage in a sandwich maker.Which sandwich maker is good? A toasting one or a grilling one?

You can easily toast bread in a panini press or a grilling sandwich maker press but you cannot grill in a toast maker.
A grilling sandwich maker is an additional advantage over a simple toasting sandwich maker.
While the toasting sandwich maker can only toast the bread and the ingredients present beneath the bread, a grilling sandwich maker can even grill the food placed inside apart from casual toasting. What is the difference between a toaster and a sandwich maker?

A toaster has a simple and a single function. To brown burn *(or) toast the bread that is placed inside it. A sandwich maker on the other hand heats and grills not just the bread placed inside it but also the food ingredients placed inside it. Also, a toaster usually has a verticle body type whereas a sandwich maker has a suitcase or a closed box type model.

The best dishwashers you can buy

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.Maytag/Business Insider

  • High-quality dishwashers leave your dishes sparkling clean and dry while efficiently using water and electricity.
  • The Bosch 500 Series 24-inch Pocket Handle Dishwasher is our top pick because it features a third rack allowing it to hold more items, runs quietly, and uses less than three gallons of water per cycle.

My family and I recently moved cross-country into a house that is still in the process of being remodeled. We have a barebones kitchen to work with. And, as I spend half an hour or so each day at the sink scrubbing away, there is no appliance I miss more than a trusty dishwasher.

When it comes to time savings, a dishwasher is well worth the investment. Our top pick is just a smidge over $800, but you can find decent models for half that price. When shopping for a dishwasher, there are a number of features that tend to lend themselves to better performance and durability. You should look for nylon-coated racks since they tend to have a longer lifespan. A soil sensor is also helpful because it will let your washer know when to end the cycle or if it should keep going.

Perhaps one of the most important features to look for is a stainless steel tub. If you can afford the heftier price tag, stainless steel tubs will speed up the drying process, dampen noise, and they tend to last longer than their plastic counterparts.

Many of the newer dishwasher models feature top controls, as opposed to the classic front controls. The top controls give the machine a sleeker, more attractive look. Another feature manufacturers celebrate is the food grinder, or masticator, which uses a blade to pulverize food debris. However, this is just another part that could potentially break. You may prefer filters, which collect food mid-cycle, are durable, and only need to be cleaned a couple of times annually.

While researching the best dishwashers, we poured through thousands of buyer and expert reviews and ratings of dozens of models. Our guide features appliances with a track record of performance, durability, and eco-friendliness while balancing affordability.

Here are our picks for the best dishwashers you can buy:

  • Best overall: Bosch 500 Series 24-inch Pocket Handle Dishwasher (SHPM65W55N)
  • Best budget: Maytag 24-inch Front Control Built-in Tall Tub Dishwasher (MDB4949SHZ)
  • Best drying dishwasher: KitchenAid Top Control Dishwasher (KDTM354DSS)
  • Best for décor: Frigidaire Gallery 24-inch Tall Tub Built-In Dishwasher (FGID2466QF)

It’s so quiet that it has a special light on the exterior to let you know it’s on. The third rack basically works as a utensil holder. It’s located on the top level of the washer and can hold other oddly-shaped items, such as ramekins and ladles.

Each of the racks has ball bearings in their wheels for a seamless glide. And, “FlexSpace” tines fold down on every other row to allow for larger dishes and cookware, like frying pans or pasta bowls. The reviewer at CNET recommends the Frigidaire Dishwasherbecause it cleans just as well as models that cost twice as much. He was particularly impressed with the stainless-steel exterior. However, the reviewer was turned off by the lack of features and the tedious arrangement of the upper rack.

Reviewed recommends the Frigidaire Dishwasher because of its low cost, variety of wash options, and adequate cleaning abilities. However, in his tests, the reviewer found that the washer would remove stains from some dishes and redeposit them elsewhere in the load. Also, this model uses a lot of water.

Out of 685 reviews on the Best Buy website, the Frigidaire Dishwasher has an average rating of 4.3 stars. One of the most common comments from buyers is that this washer runs incredibly quiet. People are also happy with how well the washer cleans glasses and dishes.

One buyer pointed out that the Quick Wash cycle was designed to only wash items in the bottom rack. There are a few complaints. If you want to side mount this model, you need to buy a special kit.

The top 10 best robot vacuum cleaners in 2019

Not the biggest fan of vacuuming? How about investing in a little robot vacuum to whizz around your home for you?

While a robot vacuum won’t replace your standard vacuum, it will drastically reduce the frequency with which you need to get your standard one out, giving you more time for yourself. Robot vacuums have come a long way in recent years. They now offer greater pick-up power, have larger dust canisters, and are more high-tech than ever! Some models are Wi-Fi compatible, meaning you can set your vacuum to clean even if you’re not at home. With many models you can easily map out your home, and even set no-go areas or block off rooms you don’t want cleaned. We loved testing these nifty little machines, here are our top 10 from our recent tests! Winner VORWERK

Vorwerk Kobold VR300

Score: 90/100

The Vorwerk Kobold VR300 scored well across the board. It has two cleaning modes, Normal mode and Eco mode, and it’s methodical in its approach to cleaning floors. This model uses laser guided navigation to manoeuvre its way around and under objects and walls.

A robot vacuum will never replace your standard vacuum, but this model does a brilliant job of cleaning up everything from fine dust to larger crumbs. It even did a brilliant job of cleaning up pet hair, thanks to the small but robust side arms that agitate and lift even fine hair.

The dust canister is easy to remove and empty, and while this model isn’t the fastest, we can forgive it for that as it is incredibly thorough. It does a fantastic job of cleaning the corners and edges in particular. The app is very easy to use and setting up a floor plan is a breeze.

BUY NOW Runners-up NEATO

Neato Botvac Connected D6

Score: 84/100

The Neato Botvac Connected D6 has brilliant pick-up on carpeted floors, scoring highly – even full marks – in these tests. Performance wasn’t as good on hard floor however. Large particles and crumbs on carpet were completely cleared away by the Neato, and almost all pet hair was removed, save for a few fine strands. The D6 also did a wonderful job of picking up dust from crevices and edges but struggled with 90-degree angles.

This model works fast, which is a real plus, meaning it can clean a lot in a single charge. We also loved how intelligent this model is. If it feels it’s missed an area it’ll make sure to clean it again thoroughly. In whole room tests, it covered all of the room, but it did struggle with a few obstacles such chair legs and a lamp base, so it’s not ideal if your home is very cluttered.

Price: £649.00

Neato Botvac Connected D4

Score: 84/100

The Neato Botvac Connected D4 is a brilliant little robot vacuum. It scored well – and even got full marks on many of our carpet tests and was wonderful at cleaning a whole room thoroughly. We found fine dust pick up on both carpet and hard floor wasn’t the best, so this model won’t replace your standard vacuum for those tasks. But when clearing up larger particles, crumbs, and pet hair, the D4 did a perfect job.

This Neato model is methodical and thorough in its approach to cleaning tasks, making sure to clean all the way around chair legs, around edges, and into corners. We loved how effortlessly this model got itself out of tough spots. It managed to lift itself up and out to avoid getting stuck. The dust canister is easy to remove, empty, and refit. This is a great, reliable all-rounder that’s ideal for those looking to take their first steps into the world of robot vacuums!

Price: £479

Neato Botvac Connected D7

Score: 84/100

The Neato Botvac Connected D7 performed brilliantly when vacuuming large particles and pet hair on carpet. However, performance for fine dust on carpet let this model down. We saw some fabulous results when the Botvac D7 cleaned a whole room. This model easily detects barriers, such as chair legs, but ensures it works around them to reach all of the dirt. While this robot vacuum did view overhanging fabric as a barrier, it did still endeavour to clean around the area.

However, we noticed that the D7 struggled to reach into crevices and corners on a standard cleaning run, though an edge cleaning function is available through the app. This model is also fast and, coupled with its large 0.7L dust canister, the D7 will clean a larger surface area in a single charge. The dust canister is easy to remove and empty, and this Neato model charges in just 2.5 hours.

iRobot Roomba 966

Score: 77/100

The iRobot Roomba 966 performed well when picking up large particles and when picking up dust on carpet. It’s a joy to watch the Roomba 966 work. It’s methodical in its approach to cleaning tasks and moves around the room with confidence and assurance. If it feels it’s missed something it’ll go back and clean the area again. We found the side brush tended to flick large particles across the room and that despite being able to clean into the crevices, this model did struggle to clean into the corners.

When cleaning the whole room, this iRobot model is certainly thorough and does make sure it cleans every area, however this meant it wasn’t the fastest. It was able to recognise that an overhanging sheet wasn’t a barrier and pushed through it to the space underneath it, and it’ll follow the contours of a chair leg to ensure that all of the carpet is clean. It’s an easy to use and methodical robot vacuum.

Price: £649.99

Eufy RoboVac 11S T2108

Score: 77/100

The Eufy RoboVac 11S performed well in almost all of our tests but we found the dust pick-up on hard floor was poor. This model doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles of its more expensive contemporaries, but it certainly held its own by comparison.

Whether it was picking up small or large crumbs, or pet hair, this Eufy model performed very well either picking up everything or almost everything. The 11S is also quick, meaning it couples great performance with efficiency and as such is able to cover more space in a single charge. The RoboVac navigated the whole room well, particularly around furniture.

It was very thorough and ensured that all areas had been covered. As a result, 100% of the dirt was collected in a single session. This model has no wi-fi connectivity, meaning it can’t be programmed to start when you’re not at home, but it will clean until it’s done and will automatically recharge. It’s a great option for those looking to dip their toe into the world of robot vacuum cleaners.

Deebot OZMO 930

Score: 76/100

The Deebot Ozmo 930 is a good option for those with a heavily carpeted home. On all tests on carpet, this model performed particularly well, managing to effectively pick up both fine dust and large particles alike. Almost all pet hair was removed from the carpet, leaving only very fine hair remaining. Pick-up wasn’t as great on hard floors, however. While overall pick-up in a whole room was good, we found that this Deebot model tended to flick larger particles around the room, and into previously cleaned spots or unreachable corners.

We also found that items such as chair legs were viewed as a barrier rather than something to work around, meaning that these areas were left unclean. The dust canister is easy to remove and empty, but we found it has the smallest capacity (4.7L) of all the models we tested, meaning the canister will need to be emptied more regularly. However, we found the app very easy to set up and navigate.

Price: £549.00

Eufy RoboVac 30C T2118

Score: 75/100

The Eufy RoboVac 30C performed well on almost all of our tests. Relative to standard vacuums, it did a good job of cleaning fine dust on carpet. We found the side arms were very long and tended to flick larger particles across the floor and into the edges – the RoboVac cleaned well into the crevices but was not able to reach into corners.

While the cleaning of the main floor surface wasn’t methodical, this Eufy model certainly has a cleaning system. It cleans the bulk of the surface first then moves to clean the edges. It did a brilliant job of cleaning larger particles, picking up nearly all of the dirt.

The side arms were very good at agitating and lifting pet hair from the carpet pile, and as a result left the carpet almost completely free of pet hair, save for a few thin fibres. When cleaning the whole room, we found that this Eufy model avoided a few spots in the room, but on the whole picked up the majority of mess in the room.

Price: £269.99

iRobot Roomba 776p

Score: 72/100

The iRobot Roomba 776p is best for carpets, as hard floor results were poor and pick-up from crevices was not good either. It can be charged in two hours and in testing the charge lasted for 140 minutes of vacuuming.

During hard floor tests it did fall down a step and get stuck on it several times, but this didn’t happen when on carpet. It has two cleaning modes, a spot clean mode, standard cleaning and it’s very simple to use and set up.

Price: £209.00

Miele Scout RX2 Home Vision – SLQL0

Score: 72/100

The Miele Scout RX2 performed well when picking up larger particles on carpet. Sadly, it was let down by its performance on hard floors and when picking up fine dust. When cleaning the whole room, this model was incredibly thorough. It cleaned 100% of the dirt on the floor.

It recognised an overhanging sheet wasn’t a solid obstacle and managed to push through it to clean under those hard-to-clean areas, such as beds or sofas. However, this wasn’t the fastest model on the market, taking nearly 40 minutes to clean a single room, and considering one charge lasts 60 minutes, it’d be difficult to clean the whole house in a single charge.

We also found that the sloping face of the robot vacuum meant that it became lodged under low hanging horizontal items. The dust canister is very easy to release, empty, and refit. And this model can charge in just three hours too.

The Best Toaster Ovens of 2019

If you’re still using a pop-up toaster and can spare the counter space, you might want to consider switching up—nothing beats the versatility of a countertop toaster oven. In addition to making toast, they can melt cheese on open-faced sandwiches, heat, and crisp up a frozen pizza, or lightly fry veggies and chicken wings (in fact, one of our favorite air fryers, is actually a toaster oven). I’ve found the best toaster ovens can even turn out a roast chicken or broiled salmon as well as a full-size conventional oven. In our review, we found toaster ovens are getting faster and better at toasting than they used to be.

Our winner, the pricey Breville Smart Oven Pro (available at Amazon for $268.95), is worth the investment. Once you own it, you may never use your full-size oven again. But we also found a great, inexpensive model in the Hamilton Beach Easy Reach for quick melts, convenience foods, and perhaps a couple of baked potatoes.

To help you spend wisely, we chose six highly rated toaster ovens and put them to work toasting, baking, and broiling.

Here are the best toaster ovens in order:

  1. Breville Smart Oven Pro
  2. Hamilton Beach Easy Reach Oven with Convection
  3. Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven
  4. Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven with Double Infrared Heating
  5. Black + Decker 4-Slice Toaster Oven

Breville Smart Oven Pro

Here’s your rock star of toaster ovens. The beautifully designed with stainless steel Breville Smart Oven Pro gives you an energy efficient second oven, limited only by its size. The toasting is incredibly even and consistent, aside from the stripes left by the wire rack—common to all toaster ovens. Whether you’re heating up a frozen pizza, baking refrigerated flaky biscuits, or broiling chicken breasts, you’ll get the same (or better) results as if you used the regular oven. In fact, the Breville was the only toaster oven that broiled chicken breasts so well that they looked like they could have been grilled outdoors. That’s something few toaster ovens of any size can do.

The LCD screen presents choices for toast, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, reheat, warm, and slow cook options. Turn the dial to select the function, temperature, and time. With so many choices, operation is slightly more complicated than usual, but you quickly get the hang of it. The oven automatically preheats when appropriate. During operation the display counts down and there’s an interior light so it’s easy to keep tabs on your food.

I was skeptical that the Breville could really slow cook, so naturally I had to try it out. Using a slow cooker beef stew recipe on low power for 8 hours, I got incredibly tender meat and veggies in a delicious, velvety sauce. One caveat: I had to scale down the recipe to one pound of meat, enough for 2 to 4 portions. Sadly, the otherwise thorough manual didn’t include recipes. Breville, flaunt it if you got it! Add some slow cook recipes, please.

Included with the oven: a heavy porcelain-coated broiling/baking pan, a pizza pan and, of course, a crumb tray. There are also more versions of the Breville Smart Oven, including smaller sizes, but we can’t speak to their cooking prowess, as oven capacity is a factor in performance.   BEST VALUE

Hamilton Beach 6 Slice Easy Reach Toaster Oven with Convection

The Hamilton Beach Easy Reach Oven with Convection won’t take up space that more expensive toaster ovens do, while still delivering excellent toasting and baking. In addition, the door rolls back, making it exceptionally easy to put in and take out food. It also means more room on the countertop in front of the oven and a slimmer chance of getting burned. (On all toaster ovens, the door gets very hot to the touch.)

Of all the toaster ovens we tested, it was the fastest at toasting bread, with times fairly similar to a pop-up toaster. Biscuits come out as high, flaky, and golden as if you made them in the oven—and faster, too.

While you can broil in the Hamilton Beach, don’t expect much browning. What you also don’t get at this price: electronic controls. To operate, you pick a setting and turn a mechanical timer. The times aren’t precise but you do see the minutes counting down. While the timer only goes to 30 minutes you can choose the “Stay On” option. If you use it, remember to turn the oven off when your food is done. A lightweight aluminum baking pan is included.

How We Tested

Toaster oven testing was comprehensive, including toast on top and bottom racks at all multiple heat settings, as well as pizza, chicken breast, and other popular items.

The Tester

Hi, I’m Sharon Franke, and I’ve been testing kitchen equipment for the past 30 years. When I’m not reporting on everything from wooden spoons to high-tech ranges and refrigerators, you can find me cooking in my own kitchen. In another life, I worked for 7 years as a professional chef in New York City restaurants. While I can crank out a huge holiday meal with the best of them, using every tool in my kitchen, these day most family meals involve the toaster oven.

The Tests

I tested five toaster ovens, chosen based on their retail popularity and user reviews. I also tested the Oster Digital French Door Oven at Oster’s recommendation, but found it too large to qualify as a toaster oven. Each toaster oven was rated first on how well it toasts bread. Just like a pop-up toaster, Could it produce a range of shades and toast evenly enough that all 4 sides come out looking the same? Could it evenly toast bagels?

I baked up frozen pizza, refrigerated biscuits, broiled chicken breasts to see if they came out cooked in the inside and nicely browned on the outside in a reasonable amount of time. The convenience of using the product, including how easy it was to set the controls and the helpfulness of the special features, was also an important part of our ratings. As a toaster oven is one of the biggest “small” kitchen appliances and you’ll be using it every day, it’ll have pride of place on your countertop. That’s why I looked at its size, construction, and design.

What You Should Know About Toaster Ovens

While a toaster oven certainly isn’t the most involved purchase you’re ever going to make for your kitchen, you might have a few questions before buying. How are they different than regular toasters? What can you make in them? And what’s the deal with convection toaster ovens, anyway?

Pop-up toasters are great for making, well, toast—and that’s about it. Toaster ovens, on the other hand, can handle a whole range of tasks, including broiling, baking, toasting, slow-cooking, and even air-frying. We’ve gone in-depth about why you don’t need a regular toaster before.

Some of our favorite toaster ovens are small convection ovens, meaning they use fans—and often an additional heating element—to circulate air around the oven for more even heating and faster cooking. Convection technology is beloved by bakers who want super precise temperature control, and also favored by healthy eaters who want to get crispy foods without the added oil (our round-up of the best air fryers goes into more detail about this).

If you’re interested in this technology but don’t want to shell out for a convection-capable oven, a convection toaster oven can be a great option. They’ll cost you more than their non-convection counterparts, but we think the the benefit is worth the price.

Wondering how to clean your toaster oven? We’re got you covered there, too.

Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven

The large, handsome Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven is worth the countertop real estate if you’re a serious cook. Not only does it turn out exceptionally well-browned toast, but it bakes and broils superbly. It even comes with two racks so you can bake a pair of cake layers at once.

There are more than ten categories on the LCD screen, including one that allows you to program in two different cooking temperatures and times—e.g. when you want to bake a lasagna and then brown it off at the end. Using the “Roast” option I made absolutely perfect roasted potatoes. However so many choices do make programming somewhat confusing. Even with the manual in hand, I was occasionally stumped. Remaining cook time is displayed and there is an oven light, so checking on your food is very easy. Included is a heavyweight porcelain-coated broiling pan and a pizza stone. The manual features a collection of interesting recipes.

Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven

Much more compact than other toaster ovens, the Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven with Double Infrared Heating has a cult following. Not only does it brown bread super evenly but it does it in record time for a toaster oven or even most pop up toasters. Our only quibble is that our toast was darker than I thought it should be on the light setting. There are preset programs for convenience foods like frozen waffles and pizza and reheating that work quite well.

However, if you’re looking to actually cook in your toaster oven, this isn’t the one for you. Some common temps like 350°F, 375°F, and 450°F aren’t offered. When you’re baking you need to experiment with the time and temperature. I never figured out how to bake biscuits that weren’t burned outside and raw inside. Broiling isn’t an option on this oven. No preheat is required, remaining time is displayed in 30-second increments and there’s a very bright interior light. An aluminum baking pan is provided with the oven.

Black & Decker 2-Knob 4-Slice Toaster Oven

If price is your number-one consideration, or if you’re really space challenged, the Black + Decker 4-Slice Toaster Oven is for you. Barely bigger than a toaster, you don’t get the functionality of larger, pricier models. However, you can still depend on it for toast, baked goods, and broiled foods. To start heating, you turn a mechanical timer. If you’re cooking something that needs more than the timer’s half-hour limit, you can select a stay-on mode. Just be sure to turn it off when cooking’s finished.

A small lightweight aluminum baking pan comes with the B + D. When I baked refrigerated biscuits, I was only able to fit six, as opposed to the standard eight that come in a package.
